What are the CRICKETS? |
-
The CRICKETS program is a two-teacher, multi-grade, heterogeneous team consisting of approximately 23 sixth and 23 seventh graders. On this team, the only subject that is taught grade-specific is mathematics. While still following the Stonington curricula, all other learning is thematic, problem solving-based, interdisciplinary, integrated and often individualized. There is a strong emphasis on group work and many of the integrated units culminate in long-term groups as well as individual projects. Due to curricular structure/schedule of this team, sixth graders who are selected for this team remain on it for two years. Only students whose parents agree to this option will be placed on the team. Entrance to therefore placement is not guaranteed. (posted 07-Dec-07)

What are the May/Junes? |
-
MayJunes is a grades 5/6 multi-age looping classroom which requires a two year commitment from the students and their families. Two teachers share the responsibility of two full-size groups of children in two connected full-size classrooms. Our day is a balance of grade specific instruction during language arts and math, and multi-age learning during science and social studies.
Our goals are to help our students: grow through accountability and responsibility, appreciate and enjoy learning and discovering, and strive to become independent and self-directed learners. The MayJunes' program accomplishes this through a variety of research-based teaching strategies that promote student achievement. Teamwork, cooperation, and goal-setting are woven into our daily routines to which the success of our program is built.
Along with Stonington's own curriculum and academic programs, the MayJune students are also involved in an interdisciplinary, inter-district program called the Magical Mystery Tour. This program brings together students from urban and suburban school districts to promote friendship and understanding in an academic setting. Our students are paired up with other students from a different school every year and are able to participate in team building activities, mystery writing, and learning from professional illustrators, authors, and scientists who are invited to our schools through this program.
